As a key component of Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) strategy for sustainable development, the bioeconomy leverages biological resources, innovative technologies, and eco-friendly practices to produce value-added products while minimizing environmental impact. By merging agricultural advancements, biotechnological innovations, and circular economy principles, the bioeconomy not only boosts resource efficiency but also strengthens economic resilience and environmental sustainability.
Organized by KMUTT, in collaboration with the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) and supported by Hub Net Zero, this seminar features two esteemed experts from Denmark and Thailand who will share their insights on bioeconomy research and policy in Europe and Thailand.
- Prof. Dr. Lene Lange is a founder and CEO of LL-BioEconomy, a research and advisory SME based on Denmark dedicated to improving the utilization of global bioresources. Her career spans both the private sector and academia. She held R&D roles at Novo, Novo Nordisk, and Novozymes A/S, culminating as Director of Research in Molecular Biotechnology at Novozymes R&D. In 2007, she transitioned to academia, holding leadership roles such as Head of the Institute of Biology at the University of Copenhagen, Dean of Research and Professor in Biotechnology at Aalborg University, and Professor and Research Leader at the Technical University of Denmark. Over the past 25 years, she has chaired and served on advisory research committees and science councils across all seven Danish ministries and various international organizations, notably the Vice Chair of the Scientific Committee of the EU Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), Board Chair of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), and Program Chair of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). Her company, LL-BioEconomy, is a research partner in several BioEconomy-relevant project consortia at the Danish, Nordic, European, and international levels.
- Dr. Warinthorn Songkasiri currently serves as Director of Biochemical Engineering and Systems Biology Research Group at the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC). She joined BIOTEC in 2003 after earning her PhD in Environmental Engineering from Northwestern University on a Royal Thai Government scholarship. She became the group’s director in 2019. Dr. Songkasiri specializes in starch engineering, process optimization, anaerobic wastewater treatment, and biogas production technologies. She has led numerous projects promoting a circular economy in the cassava value chain, focusing on Thailand and the Mekong subregion. She has published over 20 papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals and presented more than 60 conference papers. She also served as Vice President for Research Strategy at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT).
