On 10 October 2024, a focus group meeting on “Scenario Setting for Thailand’s Long-term Energy Planning for Carbon Neutrality” was held at Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn in Bangkok. This meeting was part of a collaborative research effort under the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility and Climate (TGC EMC) project, in partnership with King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). The initiative focuses on integrated energy systems modelling and analysis to support Thailand’s Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) in formulating a comprehensive long-term energy plan and emission reduction pathways.
The event brought together over 40 participants, representing key stakeholders such as policymakers, planners, analysts, and technical experts from various ministries and related organizations. KMUTT researchers, who are also members of Hub Net Zero, presented preliminary findings, which served as a foundation for brainstorming and discussions. Participants collaboratively refined scenarios, developed narratives for each scenario, and identified net-zero technology options suitable for Thailand’s context. Results from this exercise will inform the development of energy transition pathways, supporting EPPO in crafting an integrated energy plan aligned with Thailand’s carbon neutrality objective.
The TGC EMC project seeks to empower key agencies to lead Thailand’s efforts in greenhouse gas reduction and sustainable energy transitions, while fostering economic growth in line with the country’s climate commitments. The project comprises five components: 1) renewable energy, 2) transportation, 3) industrial sector, 4) biomass, and 5) Thai Climate Initiative (ThaiCI) fund.
